Going mobile

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the single greatest tool a web designer AND a business owner have in their arsenal when it comes to online advertising. A customer goes online looking for a local contractor, so they type “contractor near Middleboro, MA,” and up pops a whole onslaught of choices. On top and the sides you see ads, half way down is a map listing, with several websites listed above or below.

This is all accomplished through SEO integration. By utilizing key words, search parameters, descriptions, titles, labeling, meta tags, and other techniques, web designers and developers work to boost their clients website to the top rankings of search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.). The trick is being able to do it correctly, without violating “Search Engine Rules” and predicting how potential customers are going to find you.

< META > tags
All websites are constructed using a special coding language called HyperText Markup Language, or HTML. There have been many coding languages developed to enhance a website, such as Cascading Stylesheets (CSS), JavaScript, eXtensive Markup Language (XML), and so on, but just like every house needs a foundation, HTML is the basis upon which a website is built.

HTML uses “tags,” which are special words or codes that tell a browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome) how to display a website. We (web designers) have all sorts of rules we must follow, and a certain set of codes or tags we must use to define a website. In particularly, a < META > tag is one of those special tags we use that will help define your website and boost your rankings in search engine results.

In the < META > section, we put in key words that define what we believe people will type into Google or another search engine in the hopes of having your website be the number 1 search result. We work with you, our client, to come up with an extensive list or key words to ensure that we have all of these key words in this section, which will only help your business!

Google, as well as other search engines, like websites that are “community friendly,” meaning that you have links to other websites, and others are linked back to you. It’s also important that the names of your links are working properly, are clearly defined (yes, with more keywords!), and are linked to websites that are relevant to your website and business. If you own a flower shop but you have a link to your favorite heavy metal band on the home page, Google will lower your rating and could hurt your rankings.

One of the biggest things people are looking for when they go to a website is information about your business, your contact info, and your products or services. We work with you to have content on every page of your site that is saturated with key words about the type of business you are. For example, if you were to reread this page, you’ll notice how many times I have used some sort of variation of website, business, web designer and so on. Google and other search engines have special programs that “read” your website looking for these key words. They log them in their servers and in turn, it helps your rankings!

Everyone likes to see pictures! Whether it’s your products, your store front, or your staff, people want to see what they’re buying and who they’re buying it from. Search engines also like pictures. The only problem is that they can’t actually see the pictures. Instead, they read the code that we (web designers) provide to them, saying “here is a picture, and this is what it is.” Have you ever gone onto a site that has a missing picture with a red “X” in the middle, but there’s text across where the picture should be? This is called an “ALT” tag, or alternative text. This tag tells not only the visitor of the site, but the search engines what the picture is of. Just like before with your meta tags and content, it will take these keywords, log them, and boost your rankings!

Cheap tricks and shady tactics

At Nova Web Services, we pride ourselves on our integrity. We will not compromise the service we provide in giving you false hope or promises. That said, there are certain things you should stay away from whenever dealing with a web designer:
  • Never pay a company who “guarantees” you first page rankings. There is no guarantee. Sure, you can “rent” a space on Google, but it’s only a short time and then you’ll be kicked back in to the mix, usually after 30 days. This is NOT cost-effective to you, and can hurt your profits and business. Only use a reputable design company that uses the tools we’ve provided above.
  • Some designers like to “hide” key words in the website by making the color of the text the same as the background. It won’t be visible to the naked eye but search engines pick up on them (which is their hope). The problem with that tactic is it just plain doesn’t work. These search engines know about these tactics, and if they come across them, will destroy your web sites rankings and drop you onto the 567th page, if you’re lucky.
  • Paid advertisements on Google are great, and can help you, but they can be costly, especially to a small business that is trying to grow. We do provide you with credits for social media and Google, but we encourage you to utilize them wisely, sticking to special promotion or sale, as to not waste your time or money.
In short, Search Engine Optimization is crucial to your websites success. We use these tools to enhance your website, which could bring substantial success to your business. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us by clicking here.
